FAQ
Is 3 days enough?
Yes for major imperial sights.
When?
April-June, September-October. December for Christkindlmarkt.
Stand at Stephansplatz at 7 AM before the souvenir shops open. The Gothic Stephansdom rises 136 meters above you. Construction began 1137, current building completed 1340, the 137-meter south tower finished 1433. The diamond-pattern multicolored tile roof (230,000 tiles forming the double-headed eagle of the Habsburgs) survived WWII bombing intact. Climb the south tower (343 narrow stone steps, 6 euros). At the top, the city spreads in all directions, the Vienna Woods visible on the western horizon, Hungary visible on a clear day.
The Hofburg complex spans 640 years of architecture. Spanish Riding School (Lipizzaner stallions performing classical dressage since 1572), Imperial Apartments, Sissi Museum, Silver Collection, Imperial Treasury (with the Holy Roman Empire crown, 962 AD).
Imperial Treasury (Kaiserliche Schatzkammer) holds the crown of the Holy Roman Empire (made 962 AD), the Austrian crown jewels (1602), the 9th-century Imperial Cross, the Holy Lance (the spear that allegedly pierced Christ on the cross). 14 euros, 90 minutes.
Lunch Figlmuller (Wollzeile 5) since 1905. The famous wiener schnitzel made from veal, pounded paper-thin then breaded and pan-fried. The Figlmuller schnitzel measures 30+ cm across, overhanging the plate by 5 cm. 22 euros. Always 30-min wait at noon. With parsley potatoes and cucumber salad.
Kunsthistorisches Museum: 1891 neo-Renaissance building with magnificent grand staircase, Klimt ceilings. The Bruegel Room holds 12 paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder — the largest collection in the world. Vermeers The Art of Painting (1666) hangs alone. 21 euros, 3 hours.
Schonbrunn Palace: yellow Habsburg paint (“Maria Theresa yellow” — still officially specified by the Austrian government). 1,441 rooms in the Baroque palace, only 40 open to the public. The Grand Tour route covers Maria Theresas living quarters, the Hall of Mirrors where Mozart performed at age 6 for the Empress, the Great Gallery (43m long, used for the 1814 Congress of Vienna balls), Napoleons bedroom (used by him in 1809).
Schonbrunn gardens (300 hectares): Neptune Fountain, Gloriette pavilion on hilltop (15 min climb for panoramic view), Palm House (1882), Tiergarten (worlds oldest zoo, 1752, still operating, 24 EUR separate). Hedge maze 5.50 EUR.
Belvedere Palace context. Built 1697-1723 by Prinz Eugen of Savoy (the Austrian general who defeated the Ottoman Empire at Belgrade 1717). Upper Belvedere holds the Austrian Gallery: Klimts The Kiss (1908, 180 x 180 cm, gold-leaf-covered oil painting, the most photographed Austrian artwork), plus Klimts Judith I, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and the medieval-to-19th-century Austrian masters. Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours for the Upper Belvedere alone.
Heuriger in Grinzing: Tram 38 north from Schottentor to the wine villages. The Heuriger is the traditional wine tavern serving only the years house wine. Buffet of cold cuts, bread, cheese, salads. Pfarrwirt and Mayer am Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt are the best; 25-40 euros pp. Beethoven lived above Mayer am Pfarrplatz when composing his 6th Symphony in 1817.
Viennese coffeehouse detail: ordering protocols. You sit. The waiter (Herr Ober) brings you a glass of water. You order with formal address: Einen Kleinen Braunen (small espresso with milk), Einen Melange (Viennese cappuccino), Einspanner (espresso with whipped cream in a tall glass), Einen Verlangerten (Americano). The coffee comes on a silver tray with a small glass of water. You sit as long as you want. The traditional Viennese coffeehouse is your library, your office, your living room — the waiter never rushes you. Newspapers on wooden frames are stacked at the entrance. The bill arrives only when requested.
